The WordPress Melbourne meet up returns for another month. Our WordPress meetup covers everything from choosing Themes & Plugins and setting up your site, through to theme and plugin development and everything related to Core.

We currently run one meetup per month. We try to alternate between end-user/beginner talks one month and development/technical talks the following month. As it all depends on availability of presenters though, please make sure you keep an eye out on the topics for the particular month once we update the meetup page with all the details.

We’re always looking for new speakers, so contact the organisers in the meetup.com sidebar if you have an idea for a talk. We usually start the night with a light meal before the talks.

You can find links to past presentation slides (when available), over on our WP Melbourne website – http://wpmelb.org

RSVP’s for this meetup will open 7 days before the meetup starts

In this talk I will show 10 things that should not be done with your WordPress site, some for SEO reasons, others for performance, a few for security, and a couple are just plain good sense.

Ricky Blacker (https://twitter.com/RickyBlacker69) is a self taught web professional who found and fell in love with WordPress, and the community behind it while looking for a CMS platform to build websites for clients.

He originally built his own web design business after being made redundant from a factory job in 2013, but now works for WP Engine as a Pre Sales Engineer, providing a Digital Experience Platform for WordPress.

He is a Co-Organizer for the Sunshine Coast & Brisbane WordPress Meetup Groups, as well as the Brisbane Web Design Meetup group, and was one of the amazing team who put together the Sunshine Coast WordCamp in 2016 and WordCamp Brisbane in 2017.

= How to choose fonts for your website (and why you should consider something other than Open Sans) =

We’ll cover some, or all, of the following:

1. Font personality, legibility vs readability and good rules of thumb
2. How to spot (and avoid) font trends
3. Font don’ts.
3. Tools of the trade
4. Where to find inspiration?

Fiona Brand (https://brandbyname.com.au) is a Melbourne-based graphic/web designer, WordPress user and typography nerd. She believes great design must not only look good, but also fulfill its purpose.

After decades working as a graphic designer with leading agencies in both Australia and Ireland, Fiona launched her own design studio, Brand by Name. She works with all sizes of businesses to create thoughtful, clever, stylish and beautiful pieces of design.

She first encountered WordPress after going freelance in 2011, and has recently re-built her website using the Ephemeris theme from our host Anthony Hortin, together with page builder Elementor.
